Is it possible to PXE boot from USB-to-Ethernet adapter to MDT? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi guys,

We have some laptops that don't come with ethernet ports that we would like image over the network with MDT. Is there any way to make USB-to-Ethernet adapter boot into PXE? There is no option to boot into it from the F12 menu.

    Thank you,

    Steve

  • Hi

Yes it is possible - how to get into the boot option menu is different from hardware to hardware.

Here is a how to for Microsoft Surface:
1.Ensure the Surface device is powered off.
2.Press and hold the Volume Down button.
3.Press and release the Power button.
4.After the system begins to boot from the USB stick or Ethernet adapter, release the Volume Down button.

What hardware are you want to PXE??

    Kind regards

  • Hi Per,

Thank you! This will be mainly for Dell Latitude and XPS laptops.

  • Which adapters are you using?

From what I recall only the USB 2.0 ones support PXE boot but not the USB 3.0 versions.

  • It depends.

PXE booting is a function of the local Firmware. Most computers with built in Network Adapters will have the necessary settings in the firmware to support PXE boot.

Some devices that do *NOT* have built in networking adapters, but the laptop Manufacturer can add in the correct network driver and other support for PXE boot. Microsoft surface does this, for example, but surface it ONLY Supports the Microsoft Gigabit Ethernet Adapter.

The 3rd example is to just create your own soluition. Find a USB Ethernet adapter with support in WinPE, a USB Hub, and a Flash Drive, extract the DeploymentShare\boot\LitetouchPE_x64.iso image to the Flash drive. It should be the functional equivalent of a PXE boot.
