Customization for my Win 10 Edu 1709 deployment RRS feed

  • Question

  • After a good deal of trial and error, I was able to get my Start layout and Taskbar layout working. Here's what I came up with. I hope it helps someone.

    Still on my list of customizations are:

    1. Remove "People" button from taskbar.
    2. Remove Cortana from taskbar.
    3. Disable Cortana.
    4. Prevent Windows 10 feature upgrades (such as 1803, 1809)
    5. Remove/disable/hide OneDrive (with 1607, all I needed was this registry edit.)

    I'm also interested to know if the issue of "Sysprep fails in Windows 10 due to Windows Store updates" is still a problem or if it has been fixed. I have not had sysprep fail on me, and when I attempted the steps listed in this article, my image didn't get captured.

    Any help with these tasks would be appreciated!

  • to remove "People" I use a cmd call step in the Task sequence. Put this in a cmd file and everything will be fine.

    reg load HKU\Temp C:\Users\Default\ntuser.dat

    reg add HKU\Temp\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\People /v PeopleBand /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

    reg unload HKU\Temp

    For the OneDrive Problem some little PowerShell do the Magic.

    $checkOD=Test-Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive"

     if($checkOD -eq $false)

      {

       New-Item "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive"

       New-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive" -Name DisableFileSyncNGSC -Value 1

      }

     else

      {

       Set-ItemProperty "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\OneDrive" -Name DisableFileSyncNGSC -Value 1

      }

  • Do not mess with the default user profile. You are asking for trouble doing so.

    1. Can be achieved via group policy (user setting)

    2 & 3 can be achieved via group policy

    4. Do you use configmgr to manage windows updates or WUFB ?

    5. Also a group policy setting

  • Regarding Windows updates, we have WSUS, but I don't manage/run that server. I also don't run AD/Group Policy. I can only make changes on MDT.
