Hyper-V host-level backups affected by storage QoS?

    Question

  • Hi, when using host-level backups to backup Hyper-V VMs, is DPM's performance affected by storage QoS configured on the VHDX of the VM? Or does the storage QoS work on different level (inside the VM) and host and other operations are unaffected by this?

    Thanks in advance

  • Hello!

The Hyper-V Quality of Service (QoS) enables you to specify minimum and maximum I/O loads, in terms of I/O operations per seconds (IOPS) for each virtual disk inside your virtual machines.

DPM will not be affected by this QoS, if you're using host-level backups, since the host operations are not affected by the Hyper-V QoS.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Thanks for the confirmation Leon. I thought this would be the case, but wanted a confirmation while determining slowness of some DPM host-level jobs :)

  • No problem! There are no stupid questions, it’s always better to ask and to be sure :-)
