Outlook does not open pst files RRS feed

  • Question

  • Why do you have to order a program to fix outlook? Microsoft does not support their own product?  I don't get it.

I have noticed I cannot access my Archives sometimes?

the files disappear underneath Archives, also my 2nd email is not visible either?  Usually If I restart Outlook it comes back and is visible and accessible this time however it is not visible.  My work email is usable and visible though.

When I try and open my email it says  "  The set of folders cannot be opened. C:\users\myname\Documents\Outlook Files\email.pst cannot be opened

same for when I try and open Archives.

Thanks in advance for a solution?

  • Hi,

I'd recommend you first try starting Outlook with /resetnavpane switch just in case that the navigation pane setting file is corrupted which caused your folders to disappear. To do this, press Windows key + R to open the Run command, type outlook /resetnavpane and press Enter.

In addition, does this issue only happen when opening the archive PST file? Does it happen to other PST files (existing or newly created)? I'd recommend you try to scan and repair your archive PST file via Inbox Repair Tool and then test it again. You may try to run the tool several times until there is no error can be detected. Hope this helps.

  • If you are getting this error, It means something is wrong with your Outlook PST File. To get access to your emails, contacts, calendar and other stored data, you have to repair your PST file. This can be done with ScanPST.exe (In-built Utility). Here is the location of ScanPST.exe in Outlook 2016/ 2013.

Location of ScanPST.exe in Outlook 2016:

    32-bit Windows the location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\

    64-bit Windows the location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\

    64-bit Outlook the location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\

Location of ScanPST.exe in Outlook 2013:

    32-bit Windows the location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\

    64-bit Windows the location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\

    64-bit Outlook the location is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\

Locate and repair your PST file and try to open it, make sure to make a backup copy before proceeding for the repair process.

However, If your PST file is severely corrupted then inbox repair tool may not be helpful. In that scenario, you can take help of third party tool.
