Sidewinder X4 macros will not work when Keyboard and Mouse Centre is installed via LAPS RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi there,

I've been trying to get my Sidewinder X4 keyboard macros to work but this requires the Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse Centre.

However, my computer is locked down for security reasons and all installs are done through the LAPS (Local Administrator Password Solution) and therefore, the software is installed under a different user account.

Once it's installed, I can open the app as the LAPS account and add/edit/remove macros to my heart's content, but I can't actually use them. If I press the macro keys nothing happens. NB: I've confirmed that the keyboard is still functioning correctly by plugging it into another Windows 10 machine - that is not under LAPS - and it works absolutely fine.

If I attempt to run the Keyboard and Mouse Centre program as myself, I just get a blank white screen and no ability to do anything with it until I go to the Task Manager and manually terminate the process.

So I'm now stuck. I can't get macros to work if I've installed the software under a different account that is an administrator when I am not.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Dan Atkinson

Note: I originally posted this on the general Microsoft forum but it was suggested I post the question here instead due to my use of LAPS.

1 "Once it's installed, I can open the app as the LAPS account "
what's app can you open as the LAPS account ?
2"So I'm now stuck. I can't get macros to work if I've installed the software under a different account that is an administrator when I am not."
I am not sure what this phrase meaning about "I've installed the software under a different account that is an administrator when I am not."
3 can you enter winver in command prompt on both win10 computer without LAPS and win10 computer with LAPS then look the os version and os version number ?[for example windows 10  enterprise 1809 (os build 17763.316)]
4 if you create a separate without LAPS policy OU on DC and move your problematical win10 computer account  to this OU ,will the problem persist ?

5 did you try to reinstall
Microsoft® Mouse and Keyboard Center on problematical win10 ?

The Mouse and Keyboard Centre app.

I am not sure what this phrase meaning about "I've installed the software under a different account that is an administrator when I am not."

My user is not an administrator account. I installed this using the LAPS account.

can you enter winver in command prompt on both win10 computer without LAPS and win10 computer with LAPS then look the os version and os version number ?[for example windows 10  enterprise 1809 (os build 17763.316)]

Windows 10 Pro 1809 (OS Build 17763.557). This is also the same as my other (non-LAPS) machine.

if you create a separate without LAPS policy OU on DC and move your problematical win10 computer account  to this OU ,will the problem persist ?

That's not even a realistic option I can look at doing on this computer. There's nothing wrong with the LAPS account or its setup, but there appears to be a problem when the application is installed by an administrator and it is then opened by a non-administrator.

did you try to reinstall Microsoft® Mouse and Keyboard Center on problematical win10 ?

    Yes. Several times.

  • HI
you added non-administrator account(testa) to the local administrators group on win10 before you start deploying the LAOP policy.
then you install "computerMicrosoft® Mouse and Keyboard Center"app for the first time on your win10 by using testa , then add your non-administrator account(testa) to the standard users group, and finally deploy the LAOP policy. did this method work ?

  • Hi,

What is an LAOP policy? Is that LAPS?

This is not a viable solution since it basically requires removing LAPS before installing the software. Removing LAPS or otherwise rebuilding the machine to get it into a state that the LAPS solution is not implemented is not possible.

    Thanks, Dan
