downgrade back to windows xp from windows 7 with out disks RRS feed

  • Question

  • my laptop came with the microsoft windows xp, I let a friend use it and they decided to upgrade it to windows 7, Im not even sure if the windows 7 is a legal version, I want to go back to my windows xp version but I dont have the disks that came with the computer. ( my friend lost them)  I have the little book that came with the disk and I have the product key along with any identification that might be needed. The windows 7 is not genuine and I dont have the product key for that version. also it wasn't downloaded correctly from what I can tell. but this laptop is only used for checking emails and games so I dont need anything other then the xp that it came with. so how do I get it back with out the disks. also there is nothing on this computer at this time, that I need saved it was wiped clean when they downloaded the windows 7 version. I don't really know anymore then that. please help.

  • Is there by chance a "windows.old" folder on the laptop?

    If so, see:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760

(You'll need a Windows 7 DVD, but you can use one without having a license for it.)

If there's no windows.old, the easiest way to get back to XP would be to get restore disks from your laptop's manufacturer. (May not be free, but it should be much cheaper than a new Windows license.)

Good luck. With friends like these...

  • Hi,

Before going on, please check how you install the Windows 7

If you didn’t formatted the disk, please refer the following article to roll back to Windows XP

Please ensue there is a Windows.old folder on your computer:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/971760

If you have formatted the disk when installing the Windows 7, you have to back up your data and do a clean install use the disk.

Regarding the disk, you could contact your manufacturer to get the installation disk.

    Hope it helps
