Complete system lockup after Microsoft Updates? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Windows XP sp3 Pro system which completely locks up and I mean completely.  The screen saver, if running, freezes, the mouse stops functioning and even the caps lock and num-lock on the keyboard stop responding.  Only course of action is to for a reboot by powering down.  It leaves no record in the event log.

What changed is I applied most of the updates from Microsoft Update last night.  There were about 20 of them.  Has anyone run into this problem and have an idea which update might be the culprit?  I updated about 20 machines last night and so far this is the only one with the trouble, fingers crossed.

I will start removing updates and see if I can isolate the problem update but I’m kind of shooting in the dark.  Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,

  • Follow up... It seems like the problem is related to the screen saver, the Beziers screen saver to be precise.  I don't know why or why it is only that particular screen saver but I tried 5 or 6 others and they don't lock the system... so far.

I also noted that this system was built in December of 2008 so maybe it is just due for a rebuild.

    Still open to suggestions.
