Hyper-V Role not available on Windows Server 2012 Essentials RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I try to install the Hyper-V role on my new Windows Server 2012 Essentials it is simply not available. I also tried it with PowerShell and the error I got was "The name was not found". I don't want to install the Windows 2012 Hyper-V Server, just the role as it was possible in 2008. Whant do I need to do?

  • That's correct - you need a version (Standard, DataCenter) which supports the Hyper-V role. See here:

  • You may have done it on SBS 2008 but it wasn't recommend.

Essentials can't be a hyperV host.

  • Just going to add my tuppence worth as this is something I'm looking at for a home environment.

Essentials can use Hyoer V if you do an in place upgrade to Standard edition. I gathered this from windows_server_2012_essentials_faq.pdf and in addition winsupersite has a blog from Paul Thurrott stating it is possible.
So I know it's not realyl Essentials at this point but Standard with features from Essentials but it might be useful info for someone.

  • And I'll throw Paul back to you.  If you are going to want HyperV role and you want this for home so you are obviously using Technet do it right.  Install Windows 2012, install the hyperV role, install Essentials as a guest.

This is a DC and DCs should not have hyperV roles installed.

  • Thanks for the repsonse I was more pointing out that such a thing is possible and I should then have pointed out that although such a thing is possible it doesn't mean it should be done!

So yeah realistically I'm going to use Server 2012 Core with Hyper V and Essentials as a guest  as you suggest. Am looking forward to it!

  • Instead of using Win Srv Std or DC (both cost Money), you can use the free Hyper-V Server to virtualize your Win Srv Essentials

You can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/hvs

  • Not sure if anyone is still reading this but you can install the hyper-v role on Windows Server 2013 Essentials.  The licensing has changed since this was written.

    See - http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2013/09/03/understanding-licensing-for-windows-server-2012-r2-essentials-and-the-windows-server-essentials-experience-role.aspx

Hope this helps anyone searching for this answer and hitting this page, as I did.

    Regards
