  • See if the tape drive is reporting IO error 0x8007045D which equals "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error".  This will cause DPM to close out that tape and ask for another tape.

    Please run the following commands on the DPM server.

    Open an administrative command prompt.

    CD  C:\Program file\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Temp
    find /I "0x8007045D" MSDPM*.Errlog >c:\temp\0x8007045D.TXT
    Notepad c:\temp\0x8007045D.txt

    See if there are any entries in the 0x8007045D.txt file.

    Also search for "-2147023779" which is the decimal equivelent.

    CD  C:\Program file\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Temp
    find /I "-2147023779" MSDPM*.Errlog >c:\temp\2147023779.TXT
    Notepad c:\temp\2147023779.txt

    If you find any of the above errors, please make the following changes and see if they correct the problem.

    Save the below in notepad then save as BufferQ.REG on the DPM server.
    Right-click BufferQ.REG and choose the "merge" or open with.. registry editor option.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Agent]
    "BufferQueueSize"=dword:00000003

    Another fix that has worked for other customers (regardless of the tape drive manufacturer) in the past is to add the BusyRetryCount DWord to the Storport key

    for (all) the Tape device(s).

  • Hi,

    It could be because the tapes are being marked offsite ready before they are actually full. Please review this thread:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dpmtapebackuprecovery/thread/298da32d-5660-4e0e-b38a-378108eaa9e4

    Also - During a tape backup if a tape becomes full and there are no other tapes marked free, Free (contains data) or expired in the library, DPM will raise an alert to prompt for another free tape to continue backup. It will wait for 1 hour by default before failing the job.

    This prompting timeout can be configured by the registry entry “PromptingTimeOut” under “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\1.0\Prompting”

    PromptingTimeOut:REG_Dword:43200000  (dec) = 12hrs

    The Formula is   (#hrs * 1000 * 60 * 60)

    1HR =  1*1000*60*60 =  3600000  decimal

    So for each hour to wait, multiply by 3600000.

    8hrs = 28800000  decimal

    Restart the DPMRA service.

  •  HI,

    You  have mentioned that "It could be because the tapes are being marked offsite ready before they are actually full". actually Offsite ready means "

    When tape co-location is enabled, a tape will be shown as Offsite Ready when one of the following conditions are met:

     - The tape is full.
     - One of the datasets has expired.
     - Write-period ratio has been crossed. (By default, this is first backup time + 15 per cent of retention range.) as per the below thread:

    http://tst.social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/dpmtapebackuprecovery/thread/42654ed4-87ee-4258-99ad-3c596558d595

    as per the above information can we conclude that TAPE is full and there is no space left to continue the backup. and for that we have to do the registry changes to insert new tape please confirm.

  • You will need to look at the job details and see how much data was written to the tape to see if it was full or not before asking for another one.
