Microsoft Edge Can't access vpn IP address But IE 11 can RRS feed

    Hi,

    I am connected with Cisco vpn to my work, and I can access all my network IP addresses from Internet Explorer 11 But Microsoft Edge cant find the page??

    It Feels that Edge doesn't want to go beyond the vpn where there is no reason for it not too.

    If any one have a solution for this please let me know.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    Currently Microsoft Edge seems to be not working well with VPN. And the mechanism to connect to Internet from Microsoft Edge is a little different from Internet Explorer 11 and the other desktop browsers, which I can't explain clearly as I don't know much about it.

    So based on the current situation, please take use of Internet Explorer 11 instead.

    Mohamed, I had that issue also.  I think it is because Edge does not support the Java plugins needed to access the VPN.  At least that is the error message I got when I tried to connect to my company.  I'm sure that is why they included IE 11 as a backup.

    I use a VPN Connection over Shrew Soft VPN.

    I'm seeing the same issues with Shrew Soft VPN. IE 11 and Google Chrome works, but not Edge. Annoying when you're trying to use Edge as your standard browser.

    Hi can you detail some example urls?

    Does this happen only on Intranet sites? IF you have shortcuts like http://mycompanyintranet does that fail but if you give it the FQDN does it work?

    Same issue here. Using Shrewsoft VPN 2.2.2 on Windows 10 (Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro).

    Edge browser will not load ANY websites, intra or inter. Error is "Can't connect to proxy server" or simply "Hmm, we can't reach this page." Turn off the VPN and the internet sites load.

    Can't see how this has anything to do with java plugins.

    A browser which doesn't work through VPN is unlikely to gain much traction in the corporate market, or in China. Perhaps these are small markets though.

    Hi Mark.

    It happens for all IP address that are reachable through a virtual adapter created by a VPN Client (i.e. Cisco VPN clients, Shrew Soft VPN, and so on).

    In my example, in my Windows 10 routing table, I have a default route to the internet and some specific routes pointing to a VPN IPSEC next hop. All web sites using the default route works well using Edge Browser however if I try any intranet site that uses one of that most specific route that I just mentioned, it simply doesn´t work.

    Hi Mark,

    The problem is not only with Edge. I'm using Shrew Soft VPN to connect to my University Network (used to work with Cisco VPN but it doesn't run with Windows 10). After connecting I'm not able to use Edge but it works perfectly with all other browsers. The other software I'm having problems is Remote Desktop. For some reason it gives the message "Can't connect to the remote PC", although I can PING to the machine and remote access is enable. With Windows 8.1 it worked just fine.

    I just discovered that it works with the old Remote Desktop Connection that migrated from my previous windows 8.1.

    Dear Microsoft,

    Will this issue be fixed in an upcoming version of Windows 10?
    Our customers are migrating to Windows 10 and they are reporting this issue. Our company manages a pretty big VPN network in Europe, with over 1,000 locations which are only accessible over VPN. We heavily promote the use of Internet Explorer, and we hope to support Edge in the future. If this issue is not fixed soon, we will have to tell our customers to switch to Firefox or Chrome.

    I'm having the same issue. Edge will not connect to our Cisco VPN network websites (split tunneling) using Shrewsoft 2.2.2 when connected via VPN however using Chrome or any other browser will work just fine.

    I have the same issue, using split tunnelling on a Checkpoint VPN. All external websites (those connected to directly), whereas those on our internal network (accessed via the VPN) are inaccessible. It's nothing to do with plugins, it's as if Edge ignores the routing table.

    I'm experiencing the exact same problem. Microsoft Edge. Cisco VPN. None of my other browsers encounter this problem, including Internet Explorer 11. I can't believe that Microsoft still hasn't addressed the problem (as of May 2016).

    How can I thoroughly test my code on Microsoft Edge if I can't access most of my client's IPs? Smh.

    Hi Mario,

    In order to make Cisco VPN install on Win 10 you have to install sonic wall first, then install Cisco VPN using MSI package. After Cisco VPN is installed you can remove Sonic wall installation.

    I have the same problem using Cisco VPN 5 no Edge neither any other native windows 10 app it is working, I searched a lot of forums but no solution, I'm forced to use Internet explorer 11, that's sad.

    Same... Edge is dead if it cannot work over a virtual VPN adapter.  How in the world am I suppose to migrate my users to Edge when 50% of them are remote and come in over a Checkpoint Endpoint Connect VPN client?

    Same story here. I thought Edge was quite mature now and I wanted to give it a try again... just to find out today that it didn't work when using VPN, which I need like 50% of my time as I use my Surface as a BYOD. Shame!

    To keep this topic alive (as it is important to me as well), seems like WinRT web/http client shares similar issue with Microsoft Edge. I am not that much tied to actual resolution of the issue, so if we can't get ETA for that, I am fine. What I would like to get however, is at least some decent explanation of root cause of why it does not work. So that we, developers for WinRT platform, can understand what else might be affected by this issue. It's always better to realize possible risks before customer finds them in a delivered product ;)

    Some of our machines have the same issue.  We use Edge when on the LAN and can access our internal systems just fine, via FQDN (bookmarks).  Take the laptop to McDonalds and connect to their Wi-Fi and then VPN, and Edge breaks - cannot find page.  

    Copy/paste the URL (FQDN) in to IE, Chrome or Firefox and they all load the websites with no problem.

    Why is Edge not working in this scenario??

    External websites still work fine in Edge.  Just resources at the other end of the VPN tunnel which don't load in Edge.

    Worth noting, not all users are affected.  I've tested just now from a different laptop and my Edge browser loads internal sites perfectly via VPN.  Volume License O/S and GPO mean all our machines are kept pretty much aligned on the same software and patch levels, etc.

    Odd...  :(

    It'll be pretty amazing if this makes it to 2018.  I'm using FortiNet VPN.  Firefox is letting me type this in while Edge just says "Hmmm..." to all the pages in its tab that were running fine before I started VPN.

    Clues for Microsoft Engineers:

    • When I start FortiNet VPN, version 4.0.2297, I can connect to sites with Edge
    • When I connect, I can no longer connect with Edge
    • When I disconnect, I can't connect to intranet sites, and I still can not connect to sites with Edge
    • When I close FortiNet VPN, I can connect to sites with Edge

    Perhaps someone at MSFT who can fix Edge will do a resource audit in all of these states and figure out the problem... I could (and might if this lingers) do the former, but it's not that useful since I can't do the latter.

    Incidentally, I'm purposely using an older version of the FortiNet VPN app, since the newer versions fail to connect.  Please don't suggest that that's the problem given all the other posts here.

    Ich habe das gleiche Problem. Dass ich nicht über VPN auch unseren SharePoint komme. Da dieses Problem schon über 2 Jahre bekannt ist, bleibt wohl nur auf FireFox zu wechseln! :-(

    Still no resolution. Just workarounds. Don't use Edge. Use IE11. Don't use the Store RDP app. Use the legacy RDP application. How about updating the store apps to see the VPN network?

    Wow, March 2018 still no answer.  Also, any apps from App Store does not work with VPN, especially skype.  Better to download vanilla skype from website than from app store.

    Is Microsoft actually working on this bug...sorry 'issue'.  They must realize that people today use VPNs, and that their 'flagship' web browser isn't compatible.

    Don't get me wrong, I actually love Edge, but hate IE.

    So they are actually forcing me to use a competitor Chrome... Well done MS.

    Or are they simply ignoring the issue!

    Today I came across the same issue: Edge cannot connect to Web Sites via my Cisco AnyConnect VPN.

    Until today, I did not notice the problem, or maybe it was fixed, and has re-occurred....

    I'm on Windows 10 Home Build 17713.rs5_release.180706-1551

    Same issue with me as well, the issue started after upgrading to 1809. Everytime i reset Cisco VPN it work for a while and then stops again. 

    Isnt there a workaround at least provided for this problem?

    This worked for me:

    Internet Options => Connections => (select VPN) =>Settings

    => Dial-up settings fill the user name (the password was already there).

    I had the same issue. 

    I am running Build 18298.rs_prerelease.182105-1436

    Chrome would work but Microsoft Edge would not.

    I did some poking around on everything to do with my internet settings
    working and in my case, I found that somehow Enhanced Protected Mode, in Internet
    Properties(Old school control panel dialog) got turned on. 

    I don't know if my VPN Software started turning it on or not.  I just know that once I unchecked Enable Protected Mode it fixed.  You would think this setting is only for old school IE.  But it seems to also affect Microsoft Edge.
    Edge now works and I don't have to use Chrome anymore!

    By the way, I've been on preview builds for the best sever years.  Somewhere between windows insider releases, this happened.  Could be something I did.  But Microsoft Support should take a second look to see if it is bug.

    this issue was in 2015, it is now 2019 and it still does not work. What is the point of edge if it cant work with a basic vpn.

    chrome and firefox do not have issues.

    and why the hell do microsoft not respond to this serious issue

    We are using the built-in Microsoft VPN client connecting to a Windows 2016 RRAS VPN server.

    Edge doesn't work at all when VPN connections are active.

    We cannot enable split-tunneling on the VPN adapter, which has been suggested as a workaround, as this violates PCI-DSS and is generally insecure. We also cannot allow credentials for the VPN connection to be saved for the same security reasons.

    So More than 3 years after the issue has been identified, there is no fix, nor even a KB article documenting the issue!

    Edge was working for a while then stopped again a few weeks ago. 

    I use a sinology NAS and Synology assistant was working fine with edge as my default browser, all of a sudden all my computers came up with same error, cant find web page and some funny remark like Mmmm, also found that none of the machines could access the device home page of our ASUS Router, for that mater any device page. If you insert an IP address of the device in Edge it either does nothing or opens a web search page, open the same IP with Internet explorer 11 or Chrome it opens the device page perfectly, so now we have set all our browser defaults of all out machines to IE11 and all works fine. I think it may have something to do with a recently released update that changed things, as I came across several other companies getting the same problem at the same time.  I believe some windows 10 installations have not worked from original install, but looks like windows 7 machines that got updated to win 10 still worked with edge, clean installs did not. Not sure if this is consistent, but so far looks like it. Most like MS will trash IE11 as well, so might as well standardise on Chrome or any other browser. I was just getting used to edge but also no Password manager yet works, I use trend password manager but it also does not work in Edge. Some of the old faithful Microsoft supporting companies we deal with have gone to Apple as have some of my friends a lot of them due to Cortana not working even in English speaking countries, and Siri is stable.

    Curious.  Enable Enhanced Protected Mode was unchecked for me but I noticed the Enable 64-bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode option and checked it, because my Aruba VPN was installed in 64-bit mode, it and now Edge works.

    Here we are using Huawei VPN client.

    It does not create a new interface in network connections but it does show up as "Ethernet adapter Local Area Network Connection* 2" with the description "Secoway Virtual Adapter".

    I don't know what the star sign means...

    When this vpn connection is ON, the wifi connection shows "No Internet". but Chrome and Firefox work fine.

    IE DOES work if Enhanced Protected Mode (regular and 64-bit) is unchecked.

    Edge DOES NOT work on any conditions (With or without Protected Mode, or TCP fast open)

    One other interesting issue is that we have Modern Authentication active on our Office 365 Tenant, and when vpn is ON, Outlook (desktop app) will open authentication mini-browser but instantly show “cannot connect”.

    It seems that edge does not like that no interface is created in Network Connections for this vpn connection, and since the modern authentication mini browser is based on edge it also does not work.

    Hi. I've been using Edge for 5 years. The first time that I had to use VPN, I had this problem too.

    But after searching the internet, I found the solution. I realized that when we're connected to it, we should use proxy.
    (In the windows search bar, type "change proxy settings", then in "manual proxy setup", turn on "use a proxy server". then write "address" and "port" and click save button.)

    I entered the "address" and "port" that matched. Every time I connected to VPN, I would turn proxy on.

    But once I tried to turn it on again, But it was erased.
    Now I don't remember where I found this.   :(     Do you know about it?
