Exchange 2016 not receiving external emails RRS feed

  • Question

  • Site A with Exchange 2010 facing internet.

SiteB - new exchange 2016.  Migrated all mailboxes here from Ex2010 and made this site facing the internet, updated the MX and Firewalls.  Firewall pointed to this new exchange server 2016.

Issue:  When we shutdown the Transport service on Exchange 2010 inbound mail flow from Internet stops for Exchange 2016.  When we leave the Transport service running on Exchange 2010 mail flows fine.

We seen the following in the smtpreceive logs on exchange 2016:

    - 504 5.7.4 Unrecognised authentication type.

    - 534 5.7.3 Authentication Unsuccessful.

We also created new receive connector on exchange 2016 but still no glory.  All roles on one server for exchange 2016.  Dont get no bounce backs either.  It appears that all the mail reach the server but for some authentication reason fails to deliver to the mailboxes

Any insight is appreciated .......... thank you

  • Hello,

Base on the error message, it seems relate to authentication method for receive connector.

By default, Default Frontend <ServerName> receive connector in Exchange 2013 and later will accept anonymous connections from external SMTP servers with 25 port, also AnonymousUsers, ExchangeLegacyServers, ExchangeServers are checked.

    Figure as below:

Meanwhile, run below command to list connector which accept any sender message:
    Get-ReceiveConnector | Get-ADPermission | Where {$_.User -Like '*anon*' -And $_.ExtendedRights -Like 'ms-Exch-SMTP-Accept-Any-Sender'} | ft Identity, User, ExtendedRights
