Is it possible to restore Exchange 2010 databases to an Exchange 2016 server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Running a Exchange 2010 mailbox server and a Exchange 2016 in coexistance. Just wondering if it is possible, in case the 2010 server blows up, to restore the database backups done via DPM to the Exchange 2016 server?

    Thanks for any input!

  • Hi,

Recovery databases can only be used on the same version and same AD forest.

More details about it, please refer to:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876954(v=exchg.150).aspx

"An RDB can be used for Exchange 2013 mailbox databases only. Mailbox databases from previous versions of Exchange aren't supported. In addition, the target mailbox used for data merges and extraction must be in the same Active Directory forest as the database mounted in the RDB."

If unique Exchange 2010 server failed, you can use "Setup /m:RecoverServer" to recovery install lost Exchange, then restore mailbox database in Exchange 2010. For your reference: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876880(v=exchg.141).aspx

  • Hello!

I want to ask if there is a way to use DPM and restore old Exchange Database version.

I have on my production environment Exchange 2013 and I want to restore mailboxes from Exchange 2010, can I do that with a Recovery Database on Exchange 2013 or do I need to have Exhange 2010 installed on my enviroment?

I read some articles that said we need installed the old Exchange version and the old Active Directory functional level.

Should I use third party tools to restore from old Exchange versions?

    I will appreciate any advice.

    Best regards.

    Manuel
