DPM 2012 R2 Fails with "SQL Server Management tools not installed on this machine" when using SQL Server 2012 SP2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am attempting to install DPM 2012 R2 on a Windows 2012 R2 Server with a Stand-Alone instance of SQL Server.  Following all the installation pre-requisites I downloaded the latest SQL server image and installed DB engine, Reporting Services, and Management tools (Basic and Complete).  The SQL Server setup report confirms that all four components are installed and configured as version 11.2.5058.0.  All other pre-requisites have been satisfied.

The SQL Server image that I downloaded happens to be 2012 SP2.  I realize now that the SQL Server requirements for DPM 2012 R2 indicate SQL Server 2012 SP1 but that document has not been updated since November 2013.

The DPM 2012 R2 install will not continue and I am unable to clear the pre-installation check error:

Is this an incompatibility with SQL Server SP2?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Update:

Uninstalled SQL Server instance and downloaded SQL Server 2012 SP1 image from link in error message.  It takes you to the download page for the express edition of SQL Server 2012.  I downloaded the SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU file and used it to re-install the SQL Server instance.

Ultimately I had to use the ISO image to upgrade the instance to Standard because the SQL Server Agent will not run under the express edition and caused the DPM install to fail.

The DPM installation then completed successfully and after immediately went to Windows Update and SQL Server 2012 SP2 was installed.

Evidently you cannot start with SP2 until the installation is complete.
