Linking a Choice column to another Choice column in a List or Document Library RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently have a Choice column in my List and I would like to create a new Choice Column in my List and "link" it to the values in the original Choice column.  That is to say, I do not want to maintain the Choice selections in both columns, I only want to maintain them in one column and have the values automatically appear in the Linked column as well.

Is there a way to do this inside of a List or Document Library.

    Thanks.

  • Yea... sounds to me like you are looking for a Site Column, which is where you can configure your Column's options one time at the Site/Site Collection level.  You can then add that Site Column to your list multiple times (give it a different name).  This way if you need to change the available choices, you just have to edit them one time at the Site/Site Collection level.

  • It's hard to imagine why you would want this in the same List.

If you wanted it in a different List then you could use Content Types. See for instance http://www.dotnetcurry.com/ShowArticle.aspx?ID=620&AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1

Both also have links to extensive book lists and to (free) on-line chapters
