Why do I see hostname.subdomain in the wrong zone? RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I'm trying to understand why I keep seeing these registrations for clients. We have AD integrated DNS zones.  We have subdomains.  All zones are replicated Forest wide.  I created a report detailing the clients registering into a specific zone and I see hostnames in the format of "hostname.subdomain".  I'd expect to see client registered in its correct subdomain and just see "hostname".

    Is this because some users are using bad IPConfigs?  I'm thinking that someone doesn't have the right DNS registration settings.

    Example from ADSI:

    DC=hostname.subdomain,DC=domain.com,cn=MicrosoftDNS,DC=ForestDnsZones,DC=domain,DC=com

    when it should be
    DC=hostname,DC=subdomain.domain.com,cn=MicrosoftDNS,DC=ForestDnsZones,DC=domain,DC=com
