which one to go for DPM 2007 or DPM 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Now we have had DPM 2007 licenses for over a year now both Server and Agent for our MOSS 2007 servers but we have never got around two deploying DPM 2007 yet now as DPM 2010 has been released I have been wondering to deploy DPM 2010 and not DPM 2007. As DPM 2010 supports MOSS 2007 as well so why not do DPM 2010.

So what do you guys think? is DPM 2010 better for MOSS 2007 or not? I have been hearing a lot of news about how DPM 2010 is good for SPS2010 but nothing about MOSS 2007 besides that it supports it as well.

Any comments / suggestions? thanks in advance.

  • Hello,

Yes, DPM 2010 does support protecting MOSS 2007 and does it better than DPM 2007, so I would not hesitate to start with using DPM 2010.

  • Sure,

Sharepoint protection specific enhancements (This does not include Sharepoint 2010 enhancememts).

    Configuresharepoint enhancement
    - Farm admin doesn’t need to be local admin on front-end machine.
    - Has inline help.

Automatic Protection of new content databases.

    DPM 2010 cataloging enhancements:

    - Runs only once in a day.
    - Default is first backup time + 3 hours each day
Can be configured using PowerShell command.
    - Can be triggered manually using power shell command.
    - Failed catalog creation does not block the completion of backups.
    - Can run in parallel to backup.
    - Retry with Full on failure
If incremental backup fails then triggers a full.

Parallel backups for both SQL 2005 and 2008.

    - SQL 2005 hotfix required (KB 961704)
    - Allows you to configure which databases on the same SQL Server should be backed up in parallel.
    - Optimizes on disk throughput.

    More granular recovery
    - Added support for host headers and list items.

A few general enhancements in DPM 2010 that make it better over DPM 2007

    - Auto Consistency Check and Auto Re-try of failed backup jobs.
    - Auto grow of volumes that run out of space.
