Is single virtualized DPM 2016 on each production and DR site sufficient? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I would like to propose following DPM 2016 solution for the project I am undertaking for now. Details are as following.

    1. PS (Production Site) with workloads which require protection.
    2. DS (Disaster Site)  which will run a secondary DPM 2016 server.
    3. both PS and DS each has about 64 TB of physical disks available to be used for backup storage.
    4. DPM 2016 capacity planner generated a storage requirement of 31 TB for the workloads requiring protection.
    5. The link between PS and DS is 1 GBPs.

Business objectives indicated have been following:

    1. Backup service should be distributed across more than one DPM servers.
    2. Backup storage should be conserved as much as possible.

    Proposed Solution:

    1. Provision WS 2016 Hyper-V host on each site (PS, DS)
    2. Enable deduplication on WS 2016 Hyper-V hosts.
    3. On PS, install/configure virtual DPM 2016 server leveraging MBS with Deduplication (for backup storage conservation)
    4. On PS, configure virtual DPM 2016 server to backup all workloads requiring protection
    5. On DS, install/configure virtual DPM 2016 server leveraging MBS with Deduplication
    6. On DS, configure virtual DPM 2016 server as secondary for the DPM 2016 server at PS
    7. On PS, configure virtual DPM 2016 server to protect DPM 2016 server at DS (cyclic protection).

    DR scenarios evaluated:

    1. On PS, workloads protected with local DPM 2016 server; will continue to be protected should local (PS) DPM 2016 server fails (using secondary DPM 2016 server at DS)  : backup service's point of failure eleminated.

    2. On DS, local (DS) DPM 2016 server can be recovered using DPM 2016 server at PS : DR site's point of failure eleminated.

    3. On DS, if WS 2016 Hyper-V host fails, backups continue to occur at PS, local (DS) DPM 2016 will remain unprotected until after DS WS 2016 Hyper-V host is recovered and (DS) DPM 2016 VM starts running.

    4. On PS, if WS 2016 Hyper-V host fails, backups continue to occur at DS, local (PS) DPM 2016 will remain unprotected until after PS WS 2016 Hyper-V host is recovered and (PS) DPM 2016 VM starts running.

    Question:

Is there any other point of failure that has not been covered?

    Please deliberate. Thank you.

    Regards,
    Shahzad.
