Application fails during OSD Task sequence with exit code 16389 (RequestContent from CAS failed. Error = 0x87d01202) RRS feed

  • Question

  • We experience a strange behavior when using a task sequence to deploy an OS together with .Net framework (4.5) application.
Once that the step kicks in to install the application we get the following error:

"The task sequence failed to install application Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5(ScopeId_59BCBA4C-DFF4-4108-922A-B0F379D9AC3A/Application_0e53477f-e752-4d52-b9b2-db24e27961b6) for action (Install Application .NET) in the group () with exit code 16389."

  • Our environment is SCCM2012 SP1 (W2K8 R2 sp1). Our SQL2K8 R2 SP2 is running on a separate VM.
Our source files are stored on a CIFS share.

  • Error = 0x87d01202 -> "The content download cannot be performed because the total size of the client cache is smaller than the size of the requested content."

Have you tried to set the "Client Cache" in your "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr" step in your Task Sequence ?

    "Installation properties" -> SMSCACHESIZE=10000

Just to see if that solves the problem.

Are you able to install the application "outside" your TS...?

  • You will need testing, but I suspect it relates to the source of your problems: RIVERBED.

Good to see you found the initial issue after we debugged last week.

Hope it helps , Kenny Buntinx www.scug.be/blogs/sccm/

  • Hello,

sorry for the late reply. Some days off :-)

We have made some tests and for now the solution was:

    * using in some case Software package instead of Applications for some software (like .NET 4.5)

    * replacing in the OSD Task Sequence the referring package "Configuration Manager Client Package" (that was originally upgraded during SP1 upgrade process) by a newly imported sw. package "Microsoft Configuration Manager Client Upgrade 5.0 ALL" for 'Setup Windows and ConfigMgr' step +  added the required parameters "SMSMP=SERVERXXX SMSCACHESIZE=10240"

As for now, the applications (with big size like Office, SAP) don't failed anymore with exit code 16389.

--> it's still a question why the original Configuration Manager Client Package seems to be a problem after SP1 upgrade.

  • Hi Vincent,

We are having same kind of trouble with a task sequence which installs software via the dynamic variable list and both hotfixes (msp) for Visual Studio are failing.

Anyway, I don't understand your step with choosing the  "Microsoft Configuration Manager Client Upgrade 5.0 ALL" because in our case it is only 2mb big and don't work by selecting.

Both hotfixes wont even be downloaded to the local PC but works like a charm out of the software center.

    Do u have any tip?

    Cheers

    Stephan

Did you update the DP's for your client package after the Upgrade?  Your source directory would have been updated to SP1 but until you update the distribution points for the package it would remain pre-SP1 on your DP's..

  • Hi,

just an update from my site.

Our problem was a powershell detection method which wasn't signed. Can be avoided by deactivating the powershell policy before installing software

    Cheers

Although I havent tested it myself, there is a client setting for "Computer Agent>PowerShell execution policy" that allows you to bypass any restrictions..

  • Is the error code 16389 really documented somewhere, or is just a generic code which does not tell any reason? Searching in different sources, it seems it may have few different reasons, like ccmcache size full or install prosess reserved by previous application installation.

  • Yannara, in my experience, the error message that is displayed in the failure dialog is very generic.  I always have to go to the log files to see what the actual failure is..
    Monday, May 13, 2013 6:41 PM
  • I get "Binary content download failed. Error = 0x87d01201", still haven´t found the reason.

  • What does your ClientLocation.log and LocationServices.log show?  We had a similar issue we banged our heads on for a while that ended up being that if we specified Internet Management Point as part of the "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr" step that the client would suddenly flip from intranet to internet during OSD, thus failing to download packages.  Not sure if this is your issues or not but we resolved it by taking out the parameters for IBCM during the initial client install and then added it as the last step of the TS via VBscript.

  • Heh, I actually remember that case of yours, William :)

In my case, we have simple http enviroment, no internet side. This error started to show up even before I set SMSMP in confmgr setup step in TS.

  • In cas.log I found that cache size is full. In smsts.log, I see that download has failed (probably because cache is full). In TS step confmgr properties I set smscachesize to 51200, and then I tried maximun GUI value 36560, still result is the same. All basic software is installed fine, some of UDI software gets installed, but then, with a application 2gb size this error comes.

Weird thing is, that even if I have increased the value of cachesize, after the failed installation if I go to a confmgr client properties, I still see a value of 5gb.

  • Is it possible that SMSCACHESIZE is ignored in OSD? Take a look:

    http://myitforum.com/myitforumwp/2012/10/04/confirmed-smscachesize-is-ignored-in-configmgr-2012/

Also I noticed, that cache size won´t empty itself, I see lot of these:

Error: DeleteDirectory:- Failed to delete Directory C:\Windows\ccmcache\64.BCWork with Error 0x00000002.
    Wednesday, May 15, 2013 6:35 AM
  • In our case this had to do with the cache size after increased size updating Office \Updates folder.

    From status message viewer (SITE):
The task sequence failed to install application Adobe Acrobat X Pro(ScopeId_49A5C9EF-5655-4DD0-B686-247188338CBC/Application_6ac4c2c3-e0cf-4dab-93d8-955aaf76d5eb) for action (Install Application - Phase 2 (Laptop)) in the group () with exit code 16389.

    From SMSTS.log
Execution status received: 24 (Application download failed )
    Installation failed.
Install application action failed: 'Adobe Acrobat X Pro'. Error Code 0x80004005

    From CITaskmgr.log
RequestContent from CAS failed. Error = 0x87d01201
    Binary content download failed. Error = 0x87d01201 : CITask(ScopeId_49A5C9EF-5655-4DD0-B686-247188338CBC/DeploymentType_4698f520-16b6-439e-bc9d-04e09d3768d0.7..Install.ContentDownload)

    From CAS.log
Not enough non-active cache to delete
    Not enough space in Cache
    CreateContentRequest failed

    Solution:
Experimented with the SMSCACHESIZE to 10240 and it finally worked.
If this is not working for you I found multiple solutions changing the cache size with vbs (hxxp://eskonr.com/tag/smscachesize/)

  • Also I noticed, that cache size won´t empty itself, I see lot of these:

Error: DeleteDirectory:- Failed to delete Directory C:\Windows\ccmcache\64.BCWork with Error 0x00000002.

We also see a lot of the messages like "Error: DeleteDirectory:- Failed to delete Directory C:\WINDOWS\ccmcache\b.BCWork with Error 0x00000002." in the CAS.log during OSD.

I've read somewhere this would be normal behaviour and if it is not breaking something, not to worry about it.
The cache is going to be made empty eventually?

  • Adding line SMSCACHESIZE=10000 totally helped me out, i also found a script to deploy to the rest of the clients. I just add the line for my new deployments, thanks very much!
