image capture - litetouch deployment fails when any application or package is added to the selection profile. dism shows ERROR_SXS_MANIFEST_PARSE_ERROR RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to run a "capture image" sequence.  The OS installs no problem, but during the capture sequence, DISM keeps failing.  If I remove all applications and packages from the selection profile, the capture is successful.  But as soon as I add an application, DISM fails with the manifest error.  This sequence was previously working for me.  I even created a new MDT server/library, but it's still failing.

The relevant portion of the DISM log is pasted below.  Any insight would be appreciated.

  • Not much context to go on here. I can barely tell from the log that this might be WIndows 7?!?!

If you were calling me asking for help, I would ask you document the source of the Windows 7 SP1 image, and verify that the image is up to date with WSUS/WU. And verify the ability to capture the image. Finally, I would ask what the apps you are installing are, If you have any 3rd party Antivirus/Encryption/Anti-Malware packages, remove them first.

I regularly simper and capture Windows 7 SP1 images, so I know the process works just fine.

  • It's Windows 2008 R2.  I'm using the same base image from the Windows ISO that I've been using for the last couple years without a problem.

It doesn't seem to matter what application I add to the selection profile; anything beyond the base image causes it it to fail.  For example, I have a couple KB patches that I imported into MDT.  If any of those are selected, the image capture fails.

I thought maybe the "ERROR_SXS_MANIFEST_PARSE_ERROR" would provide some clues.  Note that I used the same MDT server and successfully captured a 2012R2 image.

  • Yea, something is missing here. It's entirely possible that your image is corrupted, and I'm surprised that *any* application causes it to fail. Although I don't run Windows Server 2008 R2 anymore.
