Upgrading from 2012 7711

Question

Hi,
I've inherited a very old SCCM 2012 (RTM) installation, and would like to bring it up to date. The upgrade path seems a bit complex, so I'm happy to start again with the latest version. Is it possible to install SCCM 2016 in a new site alongside the old setup and then uninstall the old site ? My Active Directory is 2012 R2.
Thanks,
Tony

First, note that there is no such thing as ConfigMgr/SCCM 2016. The latest version is Configuration Manager Current Branch (CB) version 1710.
Upgrading from 2012 RTM is certainly problematic since 2012 RTM hasn't been supported in about four years. To upgrade in place to CB, you need to be at 2012 SP1, but the download media for 2012 SP1 is not publically available since 2012 SP1 is not supported any more either. You may be able to contact Microsoft support to get the media for SP1 though. One other caveat is that Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 are no longer supported for the site server either.
However, to migrate from 2012 to CB, you need to be on 2012 SP2 or 2012 R2 SP1: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/migration/prerequisites-for-migration
Thus, if you want to keep any of the existing configuration from the current site, you need to upgrade which will require a support call to get the SP1 media.

Thanks Jason,
At the moment I only use SCCM for remote control of desktops and deploying windows updates, so keeping the existing configuration is not essential, I am happy to start afresh. So is it possible to install CB 1710 alongside 2012 and then decommission the old site ?

Yes, there's very little to worry about here. Just make sure that you don't use the same site code.

Hi Jason,
I've successfully installed the new 1710 site alongside 2012, obviously all my clients still look at 2012. Do you know what is the best way to get the clients over to the new site ?
Thanks,
Tony

There is no best way necessarily.
A simple client push from the new console works as does using a startup script or a package/program from the old site.
