When you create a view on a document library you may state that items are shown "Outside Folders".
If you do this then the query will run against every file in the library so if, for example, your view criteria was Modified date = [Today] and outside folders was specified then selecting that view would show the user all files modified today irrespective
of the folder in which they reside.
