Upgrade to 2008 R2 AD RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are now using Windows Server 2003 R2 DC (one AD server only), we plan to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 DC. To minimize the change

    a) Upgrade Active Directory in the existing Windows 2003 R2 to Windows 2008 R2 AD (serverA)

    b) Add temporary Windows 2008 R2 server as a secondary DC (transfer FSMO role)

    c) Detech the original DC (ServerA)

    d) Add new windows 2008 R2 server as DC (using the same name as  serverA), restore backup files of server A.

We consider this plan, hope we can achieve

    1) if something go wrong, we detach new server and use back the old AD server.

    2) We don't need change setting when we replace the new 2008 R2 DC with the Old 2003 R2 DC. Is it possible?
