Windows updates fail RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have windows 2016 server in a VM.

Windows updates tries to install KB4507459, and fails after restart at 99% then rolls back. How to troubleshoot?

I tried to download and install windows10.0-kb4507459-x64_67d347cdf1933c9da47f7e6f96424ce89debce41 from ms web site, after run it tells it is ok and computer has to be restarted... but same problem: it fails at 99%.

Something that might help: in winduws updates list he proposes exchange CU13... that is already installed... So it seems windows tries to install things already installed.

    Any hint?

Furthermore, since I installed exchange 2016 server, if I go to Toos/system configuration, a selective start is proposed.

  • Windows updates are cumulative so the current monthly update contain new fixes plus the previous monthly update.

  • Run Windows Update troubleshooter in the following path:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\System and Security

After troubleshooter finished, check for updates again.

Since your server has exchange 2016 server, I suggest uninstall recent exchange related updates such as exchange CU13, only patching by check for updates…

Your windowsupdatelog I can’t read, you may need expert who can read French.

  • 1. Could it be that kb4507460 (9/7/2019) is bugged on win server 2016?

    2. Is it possible (I didn't find if) to tell win server not to install windows updates automatically... or even not to download them to be able to patch "offline" from a pre-downloaded executable?

    thanks

  • You can set this one to Disabled then windows update will be a manual process.

Do you have experience of users that could install it on a vm 2016 where AD is enabled in hyperv?

  • Yes I have installed it here on three domain controllers and a few member servers, and two Hyper-V hosts with no problems.

  • Updates are finally working and it doesn't find any new update anymore. But as you can see it seems that MS tried to install 4507460 then stopped then installed 4507459 and doesn't try to install 4507460 back.

Question is why some updates were needed yesterday and didn't install, and other updates are needed now?

  • I will assume KB4507460 was bugged and replaced by KB4507459 after 21/7/2019, according to my screenshot.
