Office Registry Settings within Virtual Bubble RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have run into an issue where we have sequenced (and deployed) Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2.  In order for Outlook to "see" the plug-in for Communicator, I had to add a shortcut for the native installed Outlook to launch inside the virtual Communicator package.   That was all well and good except when it came to launching certain attachments.

We have a set of users that have some specific Excel add-ins.  When you launch Excel (by virtue of opening an attachment inside of Outlook), it was as if Excel had never been run and just hang (presumably because of the Add-ins).  I could take and launch Excel in SafeMode (bypass the add-ins) from inside the virtual bubble and all was good.

I pulled the trial version of the AVE Professional package so I could actually open up the PKG file and look at the registry settings being made.  Sure enough the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Excel key was set and the virtualization level was set at "Overwrite".  I'm almost convinced that this is the issue.  Now going back, what could I set in the Communicator package itself to make it leave those native Office keys alone?

Not sure I'm explaining this correctly.

  • Prior to Sequencing:

Open Up the Sequencer - Tools - Options - Exclusions tab - Add in the registry keys.

    - or you could take the existing package and open it up and delete those registry entries.

  • Hello,

When sequencing you could add those to the exclusion-list...

  • Could you explain what you mean exactly?  Exclusion list?

  • I did find the exclusions list in the sequencer, but I'm not sure that is what I need.  I really need to figure out why this is happening to begin with.

Native installed Excel 2007 w/ Add-Ins  - launches and runs with no issues
Native installed Excel 2007 w/ Add-Ins  - launched inside the virtual bubble on same machine (hangs indefinitely)

So far, I have been unable to determine what the Excel process running inside of the virtual environment might be seeing or doing differently to cause this behavior.
