    Hi John,

It depends on whether you would like to restore PWA instance partially or completely. When you use old content database, same PWA instance name and previous PWA instance databases you will gain almost complete PWA instance replicated.

Project Databases hold all project related information, content database stores project site or project workspace information, PWA site collection maintenance relation between content database and projects databases like PDP correlation.

If you use different web application with new content database and old project databases, you can only gain projects, when you navigate to project center and then try to open Project schedule from PWA, you will get PDP error, also when you try to access Project Sites error would be site not found.

5 DB restore method is widely used and this is the only way to replicate one PWA instance to another. Along with the old databases it is very important to use same PWA instance name which is nothing but site collection in the content database, so that all project entities can be reconnected

Brian Smith’s excellent article can give more insight about pros and cons of this method
