SharePoint 2010 - Not able to check out a document RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have created a document library in SharePoint 2010 site. When I try to check out a document, I get the message "This document could not be checked out. You may not have permission to check out the document or it is already checked out or locked for editing by another user.". However, I am able to edit the document in Microsoft Word 2010.

  • What is your permission level on the document library? this could be the reason. I think you should have at least Contribute rights.

  • You can display the "Check Out To" column in the AllItems.aspx view to find out to whom the document is checked out.

If the document is checked out to others and you can still edit the document, you may have chosen "Save and edit a copy of the file" when open the file for editing.

What I don't understand is that if the document had already been checked out to others, where did you find the option the to check out files(as shown in my screenshots here: http://cid-6f40fb61d28cf147.office.live.com/view.aspx/Technology/Document%20Checked%20Out%20to%20others.docx ) , so most probably, you don't have the edit permission.

BTW, I have found a known issue which have the same error message you posted: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979634

  • We resolved this error by adding the url as an Alternate Access Mapping in Central Administration.

  • I am also having the same issue. The URL is already added as an AAM in the Default Zone and we still have the same issue. Anyone else with any suggestions?

  • I also added an alternate Access Mapping that took care of my issue. I had an intranet zone of just the host name. I added an Extranet Zone that was the host name with the FQDN added to it. That solved my problems.
