Windows XP Logoff issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've searched exhaustively, but haven't been able to figure this problem out.

I have a few new machines that have been setup on the domain.  When logging off they get the "End Program - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe Windows cannot end this program..." message.

If I take them off the domain they are fine.  Similarly, if I disable the Workstation service in msconfig, they are fine.  So I thought, well, maybe it's a policy that is hanging or something... but if there was a problem with a policy, why would it only happen to these new machines and none of the other machines on the domain?

Not sure how to fix this nuisance.

  • I think you need to reinstall the machines from scratch.

However you were close the first time by disabling the workstation service. do a comparison between safe mode start up on msconfig and disable most of the services as in safe mode, and then try to see if log off works fine.

In addition you need to diable all start up programs in msconfig.
