Restrict "Create Site" permissions to "Restricted Read" users RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have give all users of my tenant "Restricted Read" permissions on the root site collection so that they cannot create site collections and sub-sites in the tenant. When any such user logs into the sharepoint site, s/he cannot see the SharePoint link in the top bar that navigates to SharePoint page.

However when the user types in the browser window the direct URL:

    https://mytenant.sharepoint.com/_layouts/15/SharePoint.aspx

s/he can navigate to the page and can see the "Create Site" link at the top. Although s/he cannot create a site, but can still see the option. Am I missing adding/removing any specific permission or this is an expected bahvior?

  • Hi,

This is the default behavior on SharePoint online, if user do not have the rights than he/she can not create the site but can see the 'Create Site' link as their is no permission trimming on that page. You did the right thing but if user are accessing that page directly by entering the URL than you can't do any thing because there is no way to modify that page, you just need to train the users so they not access that page as they do not have the permissions to create the site.

May be Office 365 will introduce some restricted access on that page but for now you do not have any option :)

  • Hmm. This is weird. Anyway, thanks for your reponse. If that is the case, users will be confused and we cannot do anything. Also just to confirm, is there a way to let users select a custom site collection template rather than a team site/communication site/office group?

  • You can add a custom tile to app launher which can redirect users to custom site collection. Check below link to create a custom tile:
