Folder Redirection on XP and Windows 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • At the moment there is one folder redirection policy for two user groups - admins and standard users

In the policy start menu, appdata, documents, pictures and desktop all apply to XP. music and videos just follow the documents folder

When a user is created and logs on to XP first, it is all created fine, but when it logs on to Windows 7 there is a duplicate of every folder. The first copy which is the redirected version and the second copy which is stored in the user profile. However if it logs on to a 7 machine first everything all works fine!

It isn't a major problem at the moment, but it would be useful to understand why this happens and if it is possible to prevent it?

    Thanks

    Jacob H

  • Hi,

You may refer to the following Microsoft KB article for how to work around this behavior.

When you redirect the Documents folder on a Windows Vista-based or Windows 7-based computer to a network share, the folder name unexpectedly changes back to Documents

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947222

However if the above is not helpful you can post the query in GPO forum for better assistance.

  • Unfortunately this isn't the problem. What happens is there is a duplicate of every folder, the redirected vesion and one stored in the profile. You can see these when you open the user folder.

I will re-create this post in the GP forums.

    Thanks
