win 7 upgrades RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am now running the beta win 7 64 raid over my win xp pro retail. I have ordered 2 upgrades, the home and pro win 7 because I will be running 2 separate hds. I was wondering if I had to re install win xp pro and then apply the win 7 upgrade over the win xp pro. Is this called clean install, or am I confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Hello AZBLUE,

I've understand your requirement clear, but I have some concern whether you'd like to have two Windows 7 operation systems installed on one computer; I don’t think it's a good idea. According to Microsoft product upgrade policy, one Windows XP license is only allowed to upgrade to one Windows 7 OS. I suppose that you should install both Windows 7 systems successfully; but you might encounter problems while activating the product. Thanks for your time and understanding!

  • Neither the beta nor the RC versions qualifies for using upgrade versions of Win7. Therefore you will need to have an activated copy of XP on your drive in order to use any upgrade version of Win7. Installing over XP means you will have to do a clean install as it's not directly upgradeable. Suggest you back up your personal data from XP before starting the Win7 install and restore it after install completes.

  • thank you for your response which makes sense. But  would I also have to activate it before the upgrade?

  • As far as I know, yes - the XP would have to be activated.

  • Thank you, but I have one more and last question. I have the retail win xp pro 32 bit but I would like to place the win 7 64 pro upgrade over it. I hope this is ok cause I only have one xp pro 64 but it is oem and bought over the internet.

Should be OK. 32 bit XP retail qualifies a retail Win7 upgrade license, both 32 and 64 bit. MS doesn't permit an upgrade-in place from XP to Win7, or from a 32 bit OS to 64, so you must do a custom (clean) install.

  • Thanks and I believe i now have this wright. I would install win xp pro 32 retail and activate. After that I would do a clean install with win 7 64 upgrade. Now I have a second hd with another purchased win 7 upgrade. Will MS need another retail version of win or Can I just tell them that my hd died and had to do a clean install again

  • Thanks Andy. What you are saying is no doubt very true, but what if someones hd died and had to reformat? I just thought i would unplug the sata cable after I installed the win 7 pro raid first. I would then try to activate the second single hd with the home premium dvd upgrade that I ordered and tell MS over the phone that my hd died and had to replace it. i believe when we tried to purchase the upgrades before July 11 they stated that 3 per family was the limit. this a lousy setup from MS. I just thought I would give it a try. But you are correct, and thank you, Andy
