What should be the backup Policy for HyperV Virtual Machines running SQL RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • We are using DPM for backing up all VM backups from HyperV. We are deploying new SQL on a new VM in HyperV. I know if we backup VM image backup through HyperV DPM client, it may not work because we can't backup running SQL server and we must have to backup either using SQL native tools or installing a DPM client inside SQL VM Server and take it.

But then how to protect VM and at the same time ensuring SQL protection?

  • I run both.

Full backups of the VM through Hyper-V DPM agent, SQL backups through SQL VM DPM agent.

  • Hi,

Running full backups of the VM through Hyper-V and SQL-backups through a local DPM-agent inside the VM as Jon do is the best method.
In a restore-scenario you would first restore the VM and afterwards restore the SQL-databases back into the VM.

You could schedule SQL Maintenance jobs from SQL Management Studio but then you need monitor the jobs and ensure they are working. This would also require more disk space.

As you said, do not only run full backup of the VM if the VM contains SQL, Exchange or SharePoint as it will probably mess up your data during a restore.
