Spectre & Meltdown going forward RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have manually patched all our servers, but going forward, do all new Server 2012 R2 servers we build need to have the Spectre & meltdown patches and the registry fix manually applied, or will Windows update do that now?

  • Hi,

Please check the KB4093115  if it is installed.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4093115/windows-81-update-kb4093115

Windows Update and WSUS will offer this update to applicable Windows client and server operating systems regardless of the existence or value of the "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\QualityCompat\cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc" registry setting. This change has been made to protect user data.

    Best Regards,
    Frank

  • We have a 2012 R2 Template I just checked using view installed updates and checked it with Windows Update.

KB4093115  is NOT installed or offered by Windows Update so I guess the answer is I need to apply it to my template servers and we should be good.

    What about Server 2016?

  • KB4093115  is NOT installed or offered by Windows Update

Windows updates are now cumulative. This one (4/2018) would have been superseded by a later monthly update which is likely the reason it is not being offered.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4093115/windows-81-update-kb4093115

As to spectre & meltdown patches; some work-arounds were offered via windows update around the first of the year but ultimately the fix comes as a microcode update. These updates are typically delivered as part of a BIOS update for your motherboard. You should be looking for this BIOS update in the downloads site of your motherboard vendor.
