Manage IE 10 preferences with a 2012R2 Server in a 2008R2 Domain RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

We would like to upgrade from IE 9 to IE 10. I've learned that you can't manage the GPO from IE 10 with a 2008R2 Sever but you tweak the XML files. That's no option for us therefor we've installed a 2012R2 Sever in our 2008R2 Domain.

We've copied the inetres.adm file from 2012R2 to the 2008R2 DC

Now we have the posibility to create IE10 preferences on 2012R2 but we can't see and manage them on our 2008R2 DC.

My Question is:  Does the preferences still apply on our clients or do we need to uprade the DC to 2012R2?

    With best regards David

  • Hi David,

As I know, for managing IE10 with Group Policy Preferences you need to use a Windows 8 or Server 2012 Client with RSAT and GPMC.

And I also got the following informtion for your reference:

The ADMX files are updates on any computer that you have Internet Explorer 10 installed meaning that you can still edit the Internet Explorer 10 Administrative template setting from a Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 computer if you also have the Group Policy Management Console Installed.

However the Internet Explorer Group Policy preference are not as easily updated and you will still need to using a Windows 8/2012 computer to edit the IE 10 Preferences settings.

For more details: How to implement Internet Explorer 10 Group Policy with Windows 7

In addition, you may consider to creat a Windows Server 2012 VM in your environment to strictly do GPO management.

    Hope it helps.
