Best Recommendation For Active Directory Migration RRS feed

  • Question

  • I would need your expert advice for Active Directory Migration from Server 2008R2 to Server 2012R2... which is best migration site to follow the steps.

can anyone help for migration steps or any blog? any pre-requisites need to follow first before migration, we have N number of in-house applications which are dependent on ACtive Directory, do I need to inform the Application team to check compatibility with AD 2012R2?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Dharm,

So the steps that you have to do are as follows:

    • Deploy a 2012R2 Domain controller (as Global Catalog) in your environment
    • Do a DCDIAG health check after deploying
    • Check if replication is working properly using repadmin /showrepl and repadmin /replsum
    • Change all DHCP scopes to use the new domain controller as a secondary DNS server
    • Change all static IP configuration for all your servers to use the new domain controller as a secondary DNS server
    • Inform all teams to make sure that all services use the new DC as a secondary DNS server
    • Transfer all FSMO roles to the new domain controller
    • Check DCDIAG and replication again and make sure everything is working as expected
    • Decommission the 2008R2 Domain controller
    • Upgrade the domain functional level to 2012R2
