Dual booting XP/Vista - Hard disk failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a new HP PC that came with a pair of 250GB drives, and XP SP2 installed on C:. I installed Vista Business on D: and am happily dual booting.

Yesterday, I saw alerts that C: is in danger of imminent failure (three week old drive ...). I am going to be replacing the drive, and re-installing XP SP2 on it. Will this affect how Vista boots?

  • You're 100% sure you installed XP on drive 1 and Vista on drive 2 while also having the drive letters C and D placed respectively?

If so, I think you won't be able to boot into Vista after RMA'ing your XP harddrive, but a repair install by using your Vista DVD might solve the problem. Dunno.

How do you actually choose what OS to start, Using your Bios? or Vista BootManager?
