SharePoint 2010 Export/Import Site Template RRS feed

  • Question

  • I exported my site template through the Central Admin tool and attempted to import the site through the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell but received an error message stating the templates that I am exporting from is STS#-1 while the template I am importing into is STS#1 and they must be the same.

I did some research and could not find any template named STS#-1.

Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated.

  • The site template of the new site that you are importing too must be the same.  That means, you would go create a site based upon STS#1 (team site I believe) and then do the import.  If you haven't selected a site template yet or it does not match, it will not work.

  • I understand it must be the same and that is the problem I have as the SP Central Admin tool is exporting my site as a STS#-1 template.  Per my research there is no such STS#-1 template.  The site I created to import into is STS#1.

Here is the syntax from the import command.

[2/7/2011 12:31:54 PM] [Web] []   Error: Cannot import site. The exported site is based on the template STS#-1 but the destination site is based on the template STS#1. You can import sites only into sites that are based on same template as the exported site.

  • Ok, can you state the objective behind this action?

I see two terms getting merged here -> site template and export.

You either export a site and import a site OR

You save a site as a template which gets saved in site template gallery as wsp and then you can reuse it.

Can you please state which of the two apply above?

  • The overall goal for this is to set up a test environment (on a separate server) as currently we have only one installation and that is used for production (and I can't develop on that server anymore).

I am exporting a site from one (production) server (using the SP Central Admin tool) and importing it into another (test) server (using the SP 2010 Management Shell).  The server in which I need to import the site into has the empty site template created on it.  Problem is when running the commands it tells me the exported site is created using a template that doesn't exist in SP (STS#-1).  Not sure how that is possible.

  • I too got the same error while impoting the site on test server which has been exproted from the production envrionment.

    Error Message:

"The exported site is based on the teplate STS#-1 and the destination site is based on the template STS#1"

Tryging to find a solution for this error.

  • Incase somebody else stumbles on this question, here is a great reference site for the templates. You must create a template in your new sharepoint site that matched the one you exported. So if you exported a team site, you will need to create a team site to import into.
