Disable the protected view to check the issue: File>Option>Trust center>Trust Center settings>Protected view
We can also unblock the document to see if it helps.
To Unblock a protected file, right-click on the saved document and open its properties. Under General tab, click on the Unblock option next to Security “This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.”
It is also recommended that we open documents in Word safe mode to check the issue:
Win+R>winword /safe
