    I have been getting this error from day one of using this build, (5600) Not once have I been able to do an update. I even have the update icon in my Sys. Tray telling me that "Windows can't check for updates ".

    I have gone over all the setting to make sure they are all right and still no luck.

    Is there a different way I can do an update? Even trying to do it off the Net it just opens my update page where I get the same error code. The "Help" files are of no good to me as they don't tell me how to fix this problem.

    Any help would be great.

    I just wanted to update this link and let you know that you can close this thread. I did an update to Build 5728 and my update now works. I think the problem lies with me when I did the first install. It asked me if I wanted to check for updates when I installed Build 5600, but I said no because I was not connected to the Internet yet. This time I said yes and now all works just fine.

    Thank you  and if anybody else runs into this problem, then try what I did, it just may work.

    Have you tried leaving the machine turned on and set to do it's update automatically at 3am (default)? I've had occasions where I get the same sort of error when trying to do a manual update. However, by letting Vista do it's own thing at 3am, somehow, it manages to do updates.

    Wolfie, Yes I have tried that. I also changed it from the default time to 3 other ones of my choosing 3 days in a row, 8:00am, 2:00pm and 10:00pm, to see if that would work and none did.

    This is really starting to bug me to the point where I think I'm going to reformat and try a clean install. I guess I will give it to the end of the day and see if anybody else can help me, if not I will start fresh and hope it was just the install.

    I have been dealing with it for about 2 weeks.  Working with a MS techie that is trying to fix it.  We have done about 3 different things including renaming files to download new ones; emailing MSINFO32.NFO files, WindowsUpdate.log, and screenshots of error messages.

    So far, the Microsoft techie is unable to get Vista to auto or manually update.

    I was able to download the Defender updated definitions file and install it after two tries manually.  Vista still will not.

    I am sure glad I have XP on my PC and did not use the upgrade to Vista DVD from Dell.  For 2 cents, I would format C and install XP on my new laptop.  I tried to order it with XP, but Dell would not let me, I had to buy Vista on it.

    My error code is 8000FFFF.

     

    Totally stumped, tried a lot of things and no luck.... can anyone help!  Very frustrating.

    I also have this same error when attempting to install KB905866. [VISTA SP1 did not load when offered] 2 other updates KB943302 & KB943899 will not install either. My machine was around $1000 and I'm am so frustrated with this stupid OS for making my large expenditure a POS. I wish I would be able to use XP, as my other computer, an emachine, ran extremely well, my media center Gateway GM5454E continues to have issues here and there.

     

    I still don't see any response to fix this issue so where is all the tech support?

    You DO realize that this forum was for the Vista BETA... Not for the SP1 beta.

     

    My take on the issue - mind you, this applies to the Vista BETAs and Release Candidates ONLY - is as follows:

     

    We were given the chance to download Beta 2 and Release Candidate 1. In between the two were several interrim developer only builds that were NOT made for broad public consumption. As such, when a new release was put forth, the previous builds were no longer updatable. You wouldn't want to mix stuff from say, build 5740 with build 5600. There's a LOT of builds in between.

     

    As far as your issue with the full release - that scenario would obviously NOT apply. The support is at Microsoft's support site.

    Is there a solution to this error yet?  MS support has been no help and will no longer respond to my requests for help after I did everything they suggested.  Sometimes the updates appear downloaded and will show they have downloaded successfully but I cannot check manually and always get that error.  I have no way of knowing if i have all the updates.

     

    Anyone get a solution to this error message and the annoying icon on the system tray?

    Answer to what? 

     

    Perhaps this link means something to a techy geek developer and that is great for them but what about normal users?  Most of us are trying to execute the reasonable updates usually titled "critical" by windows.  We expect a reasonble solution that does not involve geek-speak and references to GDI, BGF or any other acronym that doesn't make sense to 99.99% of windows customers.

     

    How about a common sense solution Microsoft - obviously there are many of us out here having the problem.

    This thread is just an example of why you should start your own, new thread when posting about problems with Vista.

     

    This thread was started back in September of 2006. It died out after a few posts and then someone replied to it again, 14 months later, in November of 2007. The thread was originally about a Beta version of Vista and has absolutely nothing to do with the current release of Vista and certainly nothing to do with Service Pack 1?

     

    If you are having a problem, please start a new thread and include all of the details.

    I am also getting the same Error code 800B0100 when trying to install an update from Security Update for Windows Vista, marked as important, it has failed to install since 10JUN2008, I have tried all that I know to make it work?

    Is there a solution for people who are normal users and can not speak computer jargon!!

    Okay, well, all you had to do here was look at the little chart thingy, choose what operating system you had on the left and then on the right side of the grid click the link to download and install the update that fixes the issue for your operating system.  I don't know why this was so hard to read.  They gave you some techy information in the beginning sure, but you didn't need that, all you needed to know how to do was to look at a chart and turn on your brain for a second.   ...Not too much to ask really.  If that 99.99% laymans enought for ya? (oh, and no, 99.99% is not even close to accurate. Anyone capable of thinking or doing a little research could have figured this out. 99.99% is only the amount of processing your brain didn't do when looking at this simple little chart.)

    I fixed this issue on Windows 2008 Server x86 build 6002 with:

    regsvr32 Wintrust.dll /s

    Nothing else suggested here worked.
