SP 2007 on Server 2008 access works over the internet only for some machines RRS feed

  • Question

  • New SharePoint 07 on Server 08 64 bit SP2 with all updates to date on both windows and share point.  The server is a HP dual xeon 2.13 with 6gb of ram.

I'm using IP address for users to connect, 205.200.*.*/sites/***** and here's the problem.  All users are going over the internet to access this server, the server is on a fiber connection to the internet. Half of my users can connect instantaneously, while the other have their browsers sit and spin for 5 minutes before the site displays.  When the site finally displays on these machines they are missing quite a bit of content (documents, etc), when they click on the drop down menus they will not load.

On the other machines (which are connected to the same internet connection on the same wireless connection) that work fine, the site appears immediately and all documents and content appear.  All users are using the same log on credentials on both sets of machines.  I have other people try from different connections and different os's, and it's roughly the same connection rate. 50/50.  There is no common ground on os's or connection type on systems that work and of those that don't.

I've checked network resources and nothing is out of the ordinary and everything is configured fine on that end.  This server is a single server SP environment.  I have created a new site collection to eliminate any issues with the site, and both sites do the same thing.  It was originally on Kerberos, but I have since switched to ntlm, using windows authentication.

I've tried the HP fixes about TCP offload, disabling caching, and it is making 0 difference to either machine.

I'm so lost and really need some help!

    Thanks in advance.

  • The other thought is permissions on the other web server(s), are the permissions of the service accounts identical on both servers...

Can you go to the "bad site" (not loading image) and check to see if you as an admin are getting the same results.

Also in a load balanced setup have all changes, images been added to both or multiple servers?  So if user 1 goes to a site and see everything but he/she is hitting web server 1 and user 2 goes to web server 2 and is missing info that could be because it's not replicated on web server 2.

To test that you could add an Alternat Access Mapping to Custom with http://webserver1name, then have a user try who wasn't working before then do it again with http://webserver2name ... If the user hits http://webserver2name and is missing images when the later works then that's your issue.

  • There is something in your hardware NLB not services all content and not accessing the hive based on what you're saying...  What hardware load balancer are you using?

  • Thanks for the reply. I'm using my other account to access this forum now.

I do not have any NLB running on my server. Very basic install with minimum features installed (basic load to have SP running).

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for the tips.

This is a standalone server connected directly to the internet. No other computers are connected to this server.  Both the SharePoint and SQL are run off the same machine. Very basic setup.  Even using a generic team template.

Kris. If you want to email me directly I can give you the link to the server and you can see exactly what I mean by the slow log in... or.... you may be one of the lucky connections that have no issues with speed and the site flies for you.
