Windows 7 Memory Usage RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have a Windows 7 x64 Professional system on a domain with 4Gb of memory. Every day the user reports that the memory usage exceeds 85% when using the system normally. I now have the system next to me and after closing all programs, the system is still using 70% memory. I've gone through the process list and added up the working set but this only comes to around 600Mb. Firstly, why does this figure not report the correct figure and secondly why is the system using up so much memory?

  • The issue is that Windows 7 does not report in the task manager, AWE memory. This was reserving 1.6Gb of memory.

AWE can be viewed by using RAMMap. SQL uses AWE memory and this can be reduced via the management studio.
