User profile incremental synch Generic Failure

    Question

  • Hi,

We have a Sharepoint 2013 Enterprise deployment with UPS.

Saturday, 29th april, SCOM warned about UPS timer job failed:

A critical incident has occurred where the Execute method of a User Profile Service timer job threw an exception.

    ------

If you go to the job history of the server there are about 600 errors on "User_Profile_Service Application - User Profile Incremental Synchronization" with the error message "generic failure" on all of them.

It went on between 6AM to 6PM with an error roughly every minute. It has now stopped thankfully.

How can i address the original incident in SCOM? Anybody know why it starts and why it suddenly stopped? Any error message descriptions with more information than "generic failure"?

We had an upgrade from Windows Server 2012R2 to 2016 but it was the day before the error messages started occuring otherwise it would've been easy to close the incident with regards to that.

  • Hi,

It’s hard to figure out the root cause according to “generic failure” error message.

I suggest you check ULS logs, which would give you some tips and useful information to resolve this issue.

ULS viewer is a good tool to check for ULS logs:

  • Thanks for the reply Dean.

The ULS logs doesn't help very much. These are the 5 errors when you search for the correlation ID of the critical event:

    The critical one:

    The "unexpected" one:

Does this say anything for anyone? :)
