  • SQL management studio is the tool for maching SQL instances/databases... it has no relationship whatsoever with SharePoint versions/editions.

Also, SSMS is generally backwards compatible... SSMS from SQL 2012 can manage anything back to SQL 2005 (I don't think it supports 2000)

  • Hi,

Scotts correct SSMS 2012 will manage all versions back to SQL 2005.

Note: SharePoint 2007 is NOT supported on the SQL Server 2012 Database Engine.

  • Thank you Scott and Ivan for your input.  The reason for my question is because  currently the SharePoint database is on an old server running SQL 2005. I want to backup and restore the database on a new server that I have build which is a windows 2012 server.  So I wanted to know if SQL 2012 would work with MOSS2007 sp2? or am I better off installing SQL 2008 R2 to restore the database?

  • Hi,

Basically, The supportability of products is normally the minimum requirement + 2 versions, unless exceptions. The minimum requirement for SharePoint 2007 is SQL Server 2000 SP4 (I thought it was 2005SP1, I never installed SP2007 on SQL2000) and the next two versions are SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008/R2.

SharePoint 2007 is NOT supported on SQL 2012. I first attempted it while SQL 2012 was still in Beta and IO couldn't get SharePoint 2007 to install.
