  • Well, the real question is what do you need to do with sharepoint.

If you dont have sharepoint right now, I guess you can rule out sharepoint 2003 and wss 2.0, so your question should be "do I need Microsoft Office SharePoint Server or is WSS 3.0 enough for my needs"?

The Office Server comes with features that you will not have in wss 3.0 - such as enterprise search (search outside sharepoint, and search all sharepoint sites) which you dont get if you install wss only.

Also, you wont have publishing features, record managements templates, form services, user profiles, excel services, personal sites and business data catalouge.

If you dont need these features, and just want collaboration sites, blogs and meeting spaces, just install WSS - it has a lot built in, and you can always install the Office server on top of it in the future to get more.
