DPM 2007 and Bare Metal Recovery backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I just wander if you could help me. I’m trying to use DPM 2007 to perform Bare Metal Recovery backup using following method.

    1.       Take BMR backup from couple of Windows Servers 2008 using Windows Backup in scheduled tasks to shared drive which is located on DPM server. This task is working very well and creates around 500 GB .vhd images of all servers before 5 a.m.

    2.       I created DPM job which takes backup of the disk where backup files are stored at 5 a.m.

My problem is, initial synchronization takes 5-6 hours what is acceptable, however daily backup jobs takes 20 hours. In additional looks recovery point takes the same space on disk as full backup. Is any way to fix it somehow? Is it possible to schedule full job – something like initial synchronization for daily backup?

    Thank you.

You should upgrade to DPM2010 so you can manage your 2008 servers BMR function within the DPM console. This will solve your problem

  • Hi

There could be several thing regaring network, disk I/O etc that defines your problem. As I understand your question, you uses a local WSB on your 2008 servers to preform a local BMR, you then stores those file on a share on your DPM server. Later you're letting the DPM server backup those BMR files?

There isn't a straight forward awnser to your question questions but you should start of by verifying your configurations of DPM setup and hardware approach. Look into this URL for guidance http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399471.aspx (The URL is for DPM2010 but gives you a good chance to verify your side)

If you have further questions don't hessitate to post them.

  • Robert,

    Thank you for your reply.

I’m pretty sure, the problem is not in network or disk I/O as Replica Creation always takes reasonable time, just Synchronization is an issue. I believe it is because system tries to find changed blocks in huge file, where almost everything is different than last copy.

What I’m looking it to perform backup similar as Replica Creation which will keep 4 different copies. In any other software it would be called “full backup”. Is it possible in DPM 2007?

    Kind Regards
