  • I keep receiving the error code 80072f8f when I try to update Windows. I have checked the time and

date and they are in good shape; but I am still unable to update. The troubleshooter will not work and

  • Have you tried this?

How do I reset Windows Update components?

If the above fails then try to  run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)

  • Hi Shirley,
“I have checked the time and date and they are in good shape”

How did you check the time settings ?
Error code 80072f8f, it means “ERROR_INTERNET_DECODING_FAILED” which caused by the Internet Time could not be synchronized with global Update Server.

Please refer to the following step to update the Internet time to have check .
    a. ”Start”, search “date and time”
    b. ”Change date and time” and then choose “Internet Time”
    c. ”Change settings” , server “time.windows.com” and then choose update now .OK

Restart the machine to have a check.
As for the error “0x800706f7”,please run the following code to check whether the KB 3004394 has been installed in the machine . “Wusa  /uninstall /KB:3004394”
According to our experience ,this KB installed in the Windows 7 Sp1 machines will result in similar error when we run the troubleshooter tool.
If the issue persists ,please check the Event Viewer and windowsupdate.log (Search "windowsupdate.log" directly)for more information to troubleshoot the issue .If you have troubleshoot in analyzing the issue ,please upload them to the OneDrive and paste a link here .

    Best regards
