Problem with Word documents and SharePoint RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello!
    I have following problem. To clear situation: Somebody sends me an e-mail with link to word document placed in one of SharePoint libraries. All of us check our mail in MS Outlook. If I directly open the document by clicking on the link in mail (without saving it on HDD) the bottom toolbar (the horizontal one, with statistics of words, language etc, the screenshot is added with marked spot I'm talking about) is inactive, strings are gray, it shows "Words 0/0". If I save the file on hdd and run it there is no such problem. The problem doesn't seem to be serious and troublesome for users, however it has to be solved. Somehow. But I have no idea how to start.

    The image showing what I'm talking about.

    I forgot to add - we are working on Word 2007, SharePoint Server 2007, Windows Server 2003

    Best Regards

  • Found a solution, at least for me, on a few computers in my office.

    Turned out that it was an Adobe COM add-in...had the issue on another computer and it was a Snag-IT COM add-in. Just a heads up in case anyone is still looking at this, not sure how I missed the darn add-ins before. :)

    Thanks,

    John

  • I had a couple of questions:
    1. Does the word count goes gray for all the word documents stored on the SharePoint?
    2. The count of words goes gray when Word Program “knows” the number displayed is incorrect. I notice in the screenshot that you had selected part of the text in one word documents, it should display “number of words selected/total number of words” in normal condition. Will the word count goes gray if you select any part of the document?
    3. Can you open the word count dialog box through Review->Proofing->Word Count? What is shown if you can?

  • 1. No, it doesnt. At least for me. My boss claims he has it all the time (I will try to check it on his PC later). I've noticed it's more likely to get such bug with .doc that .docx.
    2. No matter which part (or whole document) I select it's still gray. Still shows 0/0.
    3. I could open the Would Count and it shows the correct numbers (while bugged).

    I think that looking for answer is much more complex in that case. I've tried to make some research to specify my problem more detailful.

    When I first opened a .docx file everything was okey, then other .doc (this one used to be bugged for sure) and it was ok. I decided to send to myself another link from different library and new .doc file opened via link from Outlook was bugged. I've checked things you asked for. Then I've opened another file - .docx, it loaded, everything was ok and also "unlocked" the other file it was unbugged.

     For me it looks quite random. It makes much harder to find a probably solution.

  • I was at the meeting with my boss and he showed me what is wrong. Word stats are wrong as well as zoom in/out option in right-down corner.

    In his case it happens all the time when he opens a sharepoint link placed in Outlook (IMPORTANT) 2007 message. File opened directly from the Sharepoint Library is not bugged. Is it possible that Outlook prevent some Word option from loading?

    If he opens a Word first everything is ok. It seems that Word while getting a request to open a file from Outlook message link doesn't load it's options correctly. It doesn't happen on every computer - he works on Lenovo notebook if this info is useful somehow.

  • Hi, Thanks for your detailed description, I reproduced the issue on my computer:

    I create an ordinary web site in IIS (not necessarily SharePoint);

    Put a Word 2007 file in the site;

    Make a simple HTML file contain a link to the .docx file in the site I just created;

    Open the HTML file with IE and click the link to open the file in Word 2007;

    Sometimes, part of the status bar feature in Word as you mentioned is disable.

    I agree that this is a very elusive issue with Word. Please use this link:  http://support.microsoft.com/gethelp/default.aspx?content=ph;en-us;11377 to contact Office 2007 support.

    And I would let you know if I get further valuable information on this issue.

  • I still got no solution. Unfortunately I don't have possiblity to contact Pro Support so it's much harder to solve this issue.

  • The biggest different between opening the link in Outlook and opening it from your disk is that the link in Outlook is going to open the file in "Read-Only" mode by default, where as the document on your disk will open in Edit mode by default.

    So, it seems like it may be a bug of some sort in Word that a read-only document doesn't show an accurate Page or Word count, but to test the above theory: If you click the button at the top of the document labeled 'Edit Document', does the Word count and Page count start working?

  • Hello Bartosz,
    Just wondering if you made any headway on this issue? Seeing something similar and would appreciate any followup information on this problem and if a resolution was found.
    Thanks

  • I have also come across this problem with a co-worker's computer that uses Word 2007.  When I open a hyperlink to a specific Word document, I can see the Status Bar information just fine, but when my co-worker opens that same link they get the same grayed out status bar problem.  It is not a permanent fix, but try opening a blank Word 2007 document first and then click on the link to your Word document.  I tried this with my co worker's computer and they are now able to see the Status Bar page number info.  Let me know if this works for you.

  • I also have this problem opening .doc files...not from sharepoint, but from a couple of different websites. Exact same issue. It does not happen when using Firefox. I do have the ability to call Microsoft pro support, so I might do that. I am just posting here in case someone else figures something out...I've been through all Word settings, IE settings...I have a computer that works and one that doesn't side by side...very very weird.

  • 1. My word count goes gray for all word documents, but it depends on what computer I am using.

    2. When I select the text, it goes to Words 0/0 When I open the document, it says Words: 0

    3. The word count seems to work when I select it via the menu, and it matches the word count shown on a working machine.

  • This looks like a possible defect.  Make sure you have Word fully updated and if it is possible please open a support case.

  • Thanks JCM2. I was able to solve this by removing the one and only COM plug-in on my PC. In my case it was a 'Send to Bluetooth' add-in published by Broadcom Corporation.

    Add-in path was c:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software\syswow64\btsendto_office.dll

    This is a Windows 7 (64bit) PC, so maybe related to the 32 bit plug-in running on a 64 bit OS?
