Expand Shared VHDX in SOFS Guest Cluster 2012 R2

    Question

  • A client has a 2012 R2 2 node guest cluster configured as a SOFS using a Shared VHDX.

We need to expand the shared VHDX and I understand that it can't be done "online" and wanted to confirm the steps required to carry out the expansion.

I assume that we shutdown both Guest Cluster Nodes, expand the shared VHDX using the Hyper-V GUI, Start up the "owner node", extend the shared VHDX in "Disk Management" and then bring up the second guest cluster node?

    Cheers for now

  • Hi Russel!

Yes that's right, you will need to shutdown both guest cluster nodes in order to be able to expand the shared VHDX.

Then boot up one guest cluster node, expand the disk partition within Windows and then bring the second guest cluster node online.

For future reference, in Windows Server 2016 you are finally able to expand a shared VHDX online.

    Best regards,
    Leon
