Windows Server 2012R2 in-place upgrade from 2012 - "just quits"

    Question

  • I've got a Server 2012 machine which hosts a lot of VMs. Specs:

    Intel Core i7-950
    32GB DDR3
    Adaptec 6805E with mirrored arrays of 2xWD 2TB and 2xWD 4TB
Several network adapters including an Intel Quad VT

This machine was an in-place upgrade from 2008R2 to 2012 about a year ago. Now I want to upgrade to 2012R2.

I mount the install media and launch Setup. It thinks for a while, copies all the stuff to the $windows.~bt folder and then just quits to the desktop. Nothing else happens. It never even gets to the point of asking for product key, edition, or EULA acknowledgement. It just stops. No error message, no nothing.

Is there a log file somewhere that I can look at to begin to determine what's happening?

  • Hi,

    try

    "C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log"

    "C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log"

     Greetings John

    Thank you John

  • Thanks, however it is dying so early in the process, the Panther folder doesn't exist yet.

I did find these two files in C:\windows however. I just attempted setup again, then searched for *.log dated today. My 2012R2 install iso is mounted as H: and is IRM_SSS_X64FRE_EN-US_DV5. The existing 2012 is EN-US.

    setuperr.log is empty. setupact.log contains:

  • I am experiencing the same issue. And in my case the server also has been upgraded from 2008R2 to 2012 some time before. MS should look into this scenario.
