How to Move Primary Site Server to another box without CAS? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We built SCCM 2012 on a VM and now want to move it to a physical server. What is the process to achieve that?

    Some details:

    - single primary site

    - database server is full SQL server 2008 R2 and lives in the same VM

    Some wrinkles:

    - the server already has about ~1000 clients reporting to it and we want to keep the same site code if possible

    - the server is hosting SUP as well as several dozen application packages

    Some questions:

    - what is the (high level) process to move this server to a another machine given that we don't have a CAS?

  • You have to reinstall and make a restore on the new server.

  • Yep, basically a standard backup (using the ConfigMgr backup maintenance task) and restore.

Make sure that OS is installed exactly the same, that the drive letters are all exactly the same, the server name is the same, and SQL configuration is identical also.

  • Follow up question.

    - We have the drives set up such that

    C: OS

    D: SQL Logs

    E: SQL Data

    F: SCCM Program Files

At some point, SCCM started to use E: for packages ( due to lack of free space on F ); how can this automatic drive selection be overridden, and, how do I deal with that for the move described above?

    many thanks!

  • you can put an empty file namned: no_sms_on_drive.sms on the  disks you don't want sccm to use.
