Hide a specific printer? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,

I looked around but cannot find an answer to this. In windows 7 is there a way to hide an installed printer? This printer is required by a program so users would need to have rights to it, however I do not want users to have the ability to choose it in the drop down menu or see it in the list of installed printers.

  • Hi,

As far as I know there is no way of doing what you describe.  What we can do, is use the Security tab of the Printer Properties to control the users that can print to it.

Your PC displays or hides local printer availability based on the printer configuration settings. Hiding a local printer allows you to prevent users from accessing it without removing the device drivers from the system. A hidden printer will not appear in the list of available local printers. Hiding a printer, as opposed to removing it from the system, allows you to restore the printer when desired without reinstalling the device.

And, there is no way in the Windows interface to hide Devices within the Devices and Printers GUI. But, you can Hide/Disable Devices in "Devices and Printers"

    Hope it helps.

  • That is not what I had in mind and truly doesn't resolve my issue. All that is doing is removing Devices and Printers and putting Printers(only) in a desktop folder. The printer I would like to 'hide' would still appear in that folder.

I don't believe what I am asking is in fact possible but I figured I would ask here before I resigned on the idea.
